Debbie Fleming Caffery: The Spirit & The Flesh

Debbie Fleming Caffery, my former instructor (and on-going inspiration) has just published a stunning book of her work in Mexico. Her photographs are simultaneously unearthly and heartbreakingly real.
From the publishers website, Radius Books:
“The Spirit & The Flesh balances the themes of grace and redemption, sin and forgiveness that Caffery encountered in Mexico and that held her in their sway. Her black-and-white photographs are themselves rich in contrast and unabashedly sensuous, deftly documenting the turbulent emotional landscape. Her wholehearted visual acuity suffuses the work, and represents an engagement with both the subject matter as well as a range of human emotion rarely seen in contemporary work.”

Guyana

In February I was hired to travel to Guyana to document the craft-making of indigenous Amerindian communities. The project was organized by the Iwokrama International Centre for Rain Forest Conservation and Development which hopes to offer an alternative to forestry by promoting the country’s craft industry.
I travelled to three communities, varying in size from 200 – 1,200 residents in the country’s isolated savanna and forest interior environments.
